About Us

What is "Nothing About Us?"

Nothing About Us (NAU) is a disabled-led, disabled persons' faction within Your Party. We're building a movement where disabled people lead the conversation about disability policy, representation, and political action. As Zarah Sultana said, we're not coming for a seat at the table — we're coming for the lot!

What does "disabled-led" mean?

By us, for us. This means disabled people are at the centre of all decision-making, strategy, and leadership within NAU. While non-disabled allies are always welcome to listen and support, we ask (by and large) that only disabled people speak and ask to speak at our meetings. This ensures our voices aren't drowned out or spoken over. This doesn't mean we'll never have interesting abled speakers at our meetings, mind!

What is Your Party?

Your Party is a new and hopefully grassroots socialist party founded by Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn. You can find out more and join here.

Getting Involved

Who can join Nothing About Us?

Anyone can join our mailing list and attend meetings as a listener - but all participants must be disabled. Participation will be understood to be self-identification as disabled. We may change our approach to this over time - we're so new that that's a decision that just hasn't been taken yet!

What's this "members area" then?

The members section (click the "Members" link on the top left of every page - should be the second link for those with screenreaders) is our new open democracy platform - based on Decidim. You can read about Decidim here, or you can get the short and quick version by going to the Help area in that members section.

How long are the meetings?

Most meetings will be 45 minutes to 1 hour; some meetings will total more than 1 hour but it is not expected that you attend the entirety of those. Any meeting longer than 45 minutes will have a fifteen minute break for every 45 minutes - so a 90 minute meeting would have two 15 minute breaks.

How will meetings be conducted?

All meetings will be chaired. All meetings will have LIMITED SPEAKING TIME. Speaking time will be clearly stated at the start of the call and will be repeated by the chair whenever anyone needs it doing. People going over speaking time will not be warned - they will simply be muted. We have all been at meetings in recent weeks where too little has been achieved because people do not respect the time and inclusion of their comrades. We will ensure that respect is given to all: we believe in equity of opportunity. The speaking time will be determined based on the number of people at the meeting and the time available for the agenda. Where possible, it will be communicated in advance of the meeting.

What if I can't use video or audio?

Though it might be hard to achieve for our first few meetings, we will be committing to a specific text chat volunteer for meetings moving ahead to ensure the participation of those who have neither the option of video or audio for calls. Nobody is required to turn their cam on, either!

How do I contact NAU with more questions?

Email us at nothingaboutus@proton.me with any questions, concerns, or ideas. We'll do our best to respond quickly!
